The ‘new look’ Washington Redskins offense under Sherm Lewis looked much like the old offense under Jim Zorn, and the Philadelphia Eagles had little trouble as they opened a 27-10 halftime lead en route to a 27-17 victory on Monday Night Football. DeSean Jackson scored a long touchdown both rushing and receiving, and Donovan McNabb threw for 156 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions in the victory. The Eagles improved to 4-2 on the season, while the Redskins dropped to 2-5.

Raiders’ defensive lineman Richard Seymour, who boldly predicted the team would make the playoffs despite their slow start, was singing a different tune after the rout:

“I don’t think we could have beaten an Oakland high school team today.”

The Kansas City Chiefs have had an awful preseason, primarily due to their inability to put points on the board. St. Louis will head to the Pacific Northwest next Sunday as they open their regular season against the Seattle Seahawks. The Chiefs will also open the NFL 2009 campaign on the road, heading to Baltimore to take on the Ravens. On September 11 the Bearcats come face to face with Indiana State again. Early on the team has come to anticipate this game as they will be getting some of their easiest points in it. It is evidently a mismatched game.

The Sycamores scored last season a whining 1-10. What little resistance they showed Louisville fizzled out as they lost at the end with 10 against Louisiana’s 30. Their encounter with the Bearcats will likely end in a similar point-massacre. It is a good thing that the game is also expected to end very early.

North Carolina State

Cincinnati battles North Carolina on September 16. The score of NC in last seasons non-conference was 57. However, at home, their record stood at 5-3. The team has power offensive tactics and an equally powerful unit. They should have worked hard on their defenses for this season. Otherwise they are bound to cave in before the onrush of the Bearcats.

Victory is foreseen for Cincinnati 45-24

Oklahoma

The game against Oklahoma is slated for September 25. The team has a blinding rushing attack that Cincinnati will have to keep in control with their defense of which they have plenty. The two teams are usually polled among the top 20 teams and their re-match this season will be more or less even.

Oklahoma has built plenty of muscle into its present team in spite of the fact that they are missing quarterback Sam Bradford. They are definitely going to try for a comeback after doing so badly in the previous season.

Cincinnati will have a slight edge at home.

Predictions favor Cincinnati to win 31-27 but with those statistics, the tables may be easily turned.

Miami

On the last day of the non-conference games Cincinnati plays Miami. This is on October 9. A 120-year old rivalry exists between the two schools who have annually fought the Battle for the Victory Bell. Undoubtedly that is one of the oldest grudge games in the US.

Cincinnati has humbled Miami for four years in succession. Miami hasn’t shown much drive in recent years and if this tendency is continued this year, they are looking at their fifth defeat in a row.

The Bearcats normally make a quick business of their matches with Miami. Game play reaches about halftime in home games.

If the forecasts are proven accurate, the Bearcats stand to better their score in these seasons non-conference games. However, they still have to perform consistently in the conference games to up their overall score.

“I’m just glad to see as many people really do as well and play as well as they did today. Philadelphia is the kind of game that I think we’re ready for. … Plus, I think we all remember so much — I know I do and so many players on this team remember — how we left Philadelphia last year.”

Seattle quarterback Todd Hasselbeck played well, amassing 249 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions but didn’t get much help from a defense that couldn’t put the necessary pressure on Romo. He sounded frustrated in his postgame comments:

“We put two weeks into this game plan. I felt like we were ready. We just didn’t get it done. …. I feel physically drained, emotionally drained. I’m frustrated. We’re all searching for answers.”

“I don’t know that we ever hit him. At this level, if you’re going to stop the pass, you’ve got to get pressure. You’ve got to force the quarterback not to throw it on his tempo.”

The Saints will now face the Miami Dolphins on the road, with New Orleans a -6 favorite and the total set at 47. After the trip to south Florida they’ll return home for a game against longtime rival Atlanta on Monday night football. They’ll then host the Carolina Panthers on November 8. The Giants return home to play the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday night, with New York a -7 home favorite and the total set at 46. The Florida Gators would go on to win the NCAA Football Championship, but it was a 31-20 victory over #1 ranked Alabama in the SEC championship game that got them there. The Gators scored– 4th quarter points to secure victory in a contest that was an epic struggle for three quarters with five lead changes and two ties.

The Crimson Tide quickly counterpunched, tying the score on an eighteen yard run by Glen Coffee and taking their first lead of the game at 10-7 several minutes later on a 30 yard FG by Leigh Tiffin. Florida responded in the second quarter, tying the game on a Jonathan Phillips’ yard FG and taking a 17-10 lead into the halftime break on another Tebow TD pass, this one to David Nelson from five yards out. Alabama regained the momentum in the third quarter, tying the score on a 2 yard Mark Ingram touchdown run and then regaining the lead at 20-17 in the final seconds of the period on another Tiffin field goal. Florida put them down for the count in the fourth, however, on a 1 yard Jeffrey Demps TD run followed by Tebows third touchdown strike of the day.

As was the case more often than not during Floridas run to the BCS title game, Tim Tebow was the big star for the Gators. The junior QB had 216 yards passing with 3 TDs and no interceptions plus fifty seven yards on the ground. Florida head coach Urban Meyer wasnt hesitant about praising Tebow effusively in his post game comments:

“I’ve had some great players, and I’ve got some great players on this team. But I’ve never had one like this. Tim’s got something special inside him. I’m not talking about throwing. I’m not talking about running. I’m talking about making everyone around him better. That fourth quarter was vintage Tim Tebow.

Alabama coach Nick Saban agreed:

“He’s a great competitor. He takes his teammates on his shoulders a lot. They have a lot of confidence he’s going to make plays, and they play that way. They scored two touchdowns where we had them covered about as well as we could cover them.”

The conventional wisdom is that the Gators are a speed and finesse team, but according to cornerback Joe Haden the world has underestimated their toughness:

“Our team is a tough team. The only reason they look past our toughness is our speed. They said we were a speed team and they were a tough team. We’re just as tough. We can still be pretty and fast and tough at the same time.”

Delhomme threw for only 65 yards with two interceptions, but D’Angelo Williams (152 yards) and Jonathan Stewart (110 yards) kept the chains moving as the Panthers won their second straight game defeating the Bucs 28-21. Tampa Bay has now lost ten straight dating back to last season and are 0-6 for the first time since’85. Carolina improved to 2-3 with the victory.

“I was just trying to make a play. You can check my record. I’ve never really tried to hurt anybody. I’ve never tried to take a cheap shot on anybody.”

Wesley could face a possible fine or suspension from the NFL but, in all fairness, it did appear to be a momentary mental lapse as he was trying to make a big play.

Tampa’s schedule has the look of them going from ‘the frying pan into the fire’ as they host the New England Patriots next Sunday-fresh off of their 57 point drubbing of Tennessee. Carolina has an easier draw, hosting the Buffalo Bills next Sunday. The game is currently off the board pending the status of Bills’ QB Trent Edwards who suffered a concussion in Sunday’s win over the New York Jets. The Panthers will then play on the road the following two Sundays, traveling to Arizona and New Orleans.

Lewis has only been out of retirement and with the team for two weeks, and has spent this week trying to ingest a crash course on the Redskins\’ offensive schemes. While he was learning on the job, head coach Zorn was trying to put the best spin possible on what can only be seen as a de facto demotion:

\”I need to have composure. I need to understand what the reality of the situation is, and I think our players expect me to rise up. We expect them to play under adverse conditions. We expect them to risk it all. … I\’m conscious of what\’s going on. I\’m not naive about what\’s going on, and yet I have to just hold back on any feelings and make the decisions.\”

Quarterback Campbell is more concerned about the convoluted system of getting plays from Lewis to him:

\”There\’ll probably be a couple of plays I have in my head just in case if some reason it doesn\’t get in on time.\”

Here\’s how things are supposed to work-Lewis will sit in the coaches\’ box above the field and read the plays off a sheet. While Lewis has years of experience working in the so called \’West Coast Offense\’, Zorn left doubt that he really knows what he\’s doing at this point stressing that Lewis \”doesn\’t know the protections\” and \”doesn\’t know the blitz schemes.\” Nevertheless, he\’ll be running the offense when the Redskins take on Philadelphia this Monday night.

Once Lewis figures out what to call, that\’s when it really gets tricky. He\’ll relay the plays via headset not to Zorn but to offensive coordinator Sherman Smith. Smith will then inform the quarterback what to run. Zorn is left in the role of a passive bystander on offense, though he will listen in to the playcalling on his headset.

Backup quarterback Todd Collins also shared his concern with the new arrangement:

\”It is unsettling. I\’ve never gone through this before. I\’ve never had a play caller get changed in the middle of the season.\”

Lewis didn\’t exactly evoke a lot of confidence upon his hiring, where he revealed that he\’d been calling bingo games at a seniors\’ center to kill time since his retirement in 2004. Still, Collins gave him a guarded vote of confidence;

\”I know he\’s been studying last year\’s game against the Eagles and seems to have a pretty good idea how he wants to call the game this week. It\’s the same plays. He might coach them a little differently or highlight some different areas, but the offense hasn\’t gone under an overhaul or anything like that.\”

The Redskins haven\’t scored more than 17 points in a game this season, so maybe the thinking is that things can\’t get any worse.

Its that time of the year again–Americans are getting ready for football. In a few months NFL teams will be opening training camp and college football teams starting practice. Up north, however, the footballs are already flying as pro football is in full swing up in Canada with the Canadian Football League (CFL).

Most Americans dont realize that the CFL has a lengthy and storied history. The league itself has been around since\’30, and the Canadian Football championship–known as the Grey Cup–has been contended since\’09. More recently, American fans are aware that a number of NFL stars got their start in the CFL including Doug Flutie, Jim Kelly, and Jeff Garcia.

The CFL is very high level professional football, but there are some significant differences between it and the NFL game:

First of all, the football itself is bigger–the CFL ball is larger than its American counterpart. If you know anything about rugby, its roughly the same as a #3 rugby ball meaning it is somewhat longer and fatter than the NFL ball. The CFL field is also longer (110 yards) and wider (65 yards vs. the NFLs 53.5 yards), and the CFL end zones are 20 yards deep as opposed to 10 yards in the NFL. The CFL goal posts are on the goal line, while the NFLs are on the end line at the back of the endzone.

CFL teams are allowed an extra offensive player (a wide receiver), and on defense they\’re allowed an extra defensive back. This means that 12 players can be on the field at one time as opposed to 11 in the NFL. CFL football also differs in that teams only have three downs to gain ten yards, as opposed to four in US football. The phrase \”two and out\” is as commonplace in CFL football as is \”three and out\” in the US game.

There\’s also a significant difference in the way the game is scored. The first time many US fans see a CFL score update reflecting a 1-0 game they\’re usually left scratching their head in confusion. CFL teams are able to score a single point, known as a \”single\” for a kick that lands in the end zone such as a punt or missed field goal.

The rule differences also extend into the front office, where teams are required to have a certain quota of their roster be Canadian born. In an effort to prevent the CFL from becoming an NFL farm system, and to protect the unique identity of Canadian football\’ of the 40 players on the roster must be natives.

Despite the rule differences that suggest a higher scoring, more wide open style of play than in the NFL it really doesn\’t work out that way. Most games end up with a final score in the 40\’s and have a similar pace to their NFL counterparts. There may be a few individual rule differences, but a strong rushing game and defense are tickets to success in the CFL as in the NFL.

The requirement of native born players making up 50% of a CFL roster also results in a much more even distribution of talent across the league. Certainly there are good teams and bad teams, but the end result is greater parity than is found in the NFL.

The CFL isn\’t in a financial position to draw the top level US players away from the NFL or, in most cases, even a NFL practice or developmental squad. While some US players are uniquely suited to the CFL style of play, most of the US players that end up there are of a similar talent level as to that seen in Arena Football.

Despite some major differences, the NFL and CFL have more in common–they\’re both high level, intensely competitive professional football leagues. Once you understand the rule differences and the unique and fascinating history of the CFL, it is a very enjoyable brand of professional football to watch.

The good news is that the CFL receives extensive coverage in the Canadian press and all you need to do is visit a couple of websites to stay up to date. Each CFL city has their own sports media, and most have pretty good websites. The best one stop shopping can be found at the leagues own and Slam! Sports, which is roughly the Canadian equivalent of ESPNs website and has extensive CFL news, opinions and statistics.
