It’s used as a counterpoint to the other group, which gets the actual medication. This is to clearly prove any benefit (or detriment) the drug itself might give. However, both groups are told what the medication is for and what it should do for them, and neither group knows which pill they’ve gotten; placebo or actual medication.

A surprising effect happens with many, many trials. That is, those who get the placebo pill still often show similar results to those who get the actual drug. You can use visualization to change the way you see things, too. Visualization is a very simple technique that really, really works. You can do this in a couple of different ways. Number one, close your eyes and visualize in your mind’s eye what you want, seeing it as though it were right there in front of you.

Another way, and this is often used in conjunction with the first technique, is to create a physical picture. Let’s say that what you want is a new car, find a picture of the car you want better yet, go get a picture taken of you with the car. Hang that picture up where you can see it every day; the more you see it, the more the vision is imprinted in your mind your subconscious mind the more power it has. The subconscious mind power that you have will make that vision a reality.

Although this has been common knowledge for years to the really rich and high achievers, it has only been recently that scientists have started to understand the very real scientific process associated with this.

You may be able to do this by simply telling yourself as you are falling asleep that in your dream, you will do or say something and then you will know that you are dreaming. Once you know that you are dreaming, lucid dreaming has begun.

This form of dream control is called mnemonic induction of lucid dreams (or MILD for short), a technique developed by researcher Dr. Stephen LaBerge. Once reminded, you are then in control of your dream. You can then decide what happens in your dream, with your imagination being the only limiting factor.

Another means of achieving lucid dreaming is by keeping a dream diary or journal, using a small notebook and pen kept by your bedside to write down everything you can remember in the minutes after waking up. Cinema is timeless. My friend, Fabian, is a big fan of old movies — he\’s French and he digs on the classics, like the old Universal horror flicks. Yeah, not the top of the charts in terms of movie trivia. In fact, it probably ranks at the bottom of movie concerns, but set design is one of the most significant in terms of what it does visually.

Yes, he worked on a number of early Hollywood classics, like WIZARD OF OZ and THE MASK OF FU MANCHU and yes, he was a genius. He built sets, using a paltry set of props, and turned them into extravagant alternate realities. Working on more than 1,000 films in his life, he still managed to give more than 1,500 science and laboratory equipment demonstrations across the States. Me, I can\’t be bothered to explain how my Tivo works to my nephew.

More than using the best pieces of equipment to dress his sets, Strickfaden was careful to use them in realistic approximations. In fact, as Fabian mentioned, he was an associate of Tesla himself. It was Tesla\’s coils that sparked and arched electricity across the FRAKENSTEIN set.

It was Fabian\’s profile of the man that got me interested in the first place, but it was verifying all the facts that made me a fan. When Karloff refused to get near the coils for the crucial climax scene, Strick (as he was known by friends and associates), volunteered to do the stunt. Intelligent and fearless — that sums up this early pioneer pretty well.

The key to understanding the authenticity — or its approximation — of FRANKENSTEIN is understanding why the laboratory equipment was used by Strickfaden.
