Hospitalist jobs are on the rise primarily due to the sky rocketing costs of medical care. The health care industry is in the middle of reform but the costs are still extremely high. The hospitalist is usually more familiar with the dealings of the hospital than the actual MD. This is especially the case when the MD operates out of their own private practice and utilizes the hospital for their patient’s stay. The hospitalist is always there. They are always available to the patients. They get to know the hospital and its staff and how the organization operates.

Being on-site all of the time is a huge advantage for the hospitalist. They get to constantly interact with patients, allowing them the opportunity to really get to know them. The hospital’s doctors usually only see the patients during rounds. They only get to know medical statistics but not the actual patient.

It takes a lot of testing and education to acquire the necessary credentials to become a hospitalist. Those interested in becoming this kind of medical professional must first complete medical school. Upon obtaining a medical license, they will choose to specialize in one area. They usually choose among specializing in general internal medicine, family or peds.

If they are members of an existing medical practice then they can work with that clientele at the practice’s associate hospital. Or they may choose to work independently and assist several different practices. Physicians are always looking to reduce their workload and will turn to hospitalist for the very valuable added assistance.

Hospitalist jobs are on the rise. The earnings are high and the hours are usually manageable. Most patients only contact with this position is during an ER visit or a longer hospital stay. They will also provide a patient’s follow up care based solely on the primary care physicians medical plan. You should know how to effectively communicate with this medical professional to assure the best care. Patients should have a list of any medications they are currently taking. Anything special diets should also be relayed to the hospitalist on duty. And any other special needs like a therapist or special visiting nurse requirements will also be fulfilled by the hospitalist upon speaking with the patient’s medical doctor.
